J/70s are 22.75 feet long and were designed to fulfill the need for an easy-to-own, high performance one-design that is exciting to sail, stable enough sailboat for the family and built to last. Over 800 boats have been built since 2012. The boats have a large comfortable cockpit (11 feet long) with open transom, deck-stepped carbon mast, moderate height boom to allow easy crew movement across the cockpit while tacking and jibing, vertical lifting bulb keel for easy trailering and launching, a small cabin for weather protection (a nice place to nap), and an outboard engine to get to and from the docks.
The J/70s started racing on Saturdays at the CYC on July 4, 2015. A group of eight sailors in 2015 established the Cohasset J/70 Fleet Association, Inc. with the purpose of acquiring and maintaining a fleet of identical J/70 one design sailboats for the promotion of one-design racing and family sailing in Cohasset, Massachusetts. The Association is a non-profit company that owns the fleet of J/70s and the individual sailors own an undivided interest in the Association, represented by shares. The total number of shares outstanding equals the number of boats in the fleet. This arrangement was chosen so that the fleet is active and robust as everyone is financially vested (no-more looking for crew!), the costs of owning and maintaining the boats are reduced by spreading the expenses among the sailors and the competition is better as the boats are essentially equal, making the races about the sailors, not the boat.
