Adult Sailing Curriculum

The Goal of our adult sailing program at CYC is to have fun learning how to sail safely.

You may want to refer to this terminology reference in case you are not familiar with one or more of the following terms.

A - Outer Harbor with the help of another student

Identify wind direction and estimate wind speed
sail trim for different points of sail
describe tacking and jibing
tack back and forth from a reach
Jibe back and forth from a reach
Tack to windward around mark
Jibe downwind and back and around mark
Bring the boat alongside a crew overboard
Identify hazards and buoys

B - Channel with the help of another student

Use ranges
Understanding the rules of the road
Sail in and out of channel with unfavorable wind and/or tide
Demonstrate how to deal with typical boat traffic that exists on the weekend
Free the boat from grounding on the mud flats without anyone leaving the boat

C - Inner Harbor with the help of another student

Pick up radio, orange box in launch shed, sign the boat out, estimate return time
Rig the boat, demonstrate the ability to leave the mooring on either tack
Sail up and back through the harbor with tide and wind
Moor the boat at the dock and then sail away
Make a mooring without overshooting, put the boat to bed, note any repairs needed in log book in launch shed

D - On days with too much or no wind, instructors should teach their assigned students the following topics

1 - Basic sailing terminology: parts of the boat, sails, running and standing rigging, sailing maneuvers

2 - How to read a chart to identify the location of the buoys and all major hazards in the inner and out harbor

3 - Point out during a low tide powerboat tour of the inner and outer harbor the location of all these hazards, marks, channels

4 - Know the basic rules of the road and how to apply them in the channel and inner and outer harbors with all types of vessels

5 - Identify the state of the tide, use the Radio to get weather reports, call CYC launch, harbormaster, issue a mayday

6 - Tie Knots: square, bowline, know when to use each, and how to make lines fast to a cleat Other optional useful knots include: clove hitch, sheet bend,

7 - Boat checkout procedures and location and use of safety equipment, what conditions the student should not sail in based on their skills, check with Davey or Instructor if in doubt

After completing A thru D, students are encouraged to request a precertification sail to identify any remaining issues to be worked on before taking the certification test. Selene Eymer, selene@eymer.com can schedule one for you. Certification may be withdrawn should the sailor be observed sailing club boats unsafely.
