CYC Sailing Awards

Aloha Bowl

The Aloha Bowl was presented to the Cohasset Yacht Club in 1966 by Peter Dillingham of the Waikiki (Hawaii) Yacht Club, to be raced for by International  210’s.

Bemis Trophy

In 1991 the Cohasset 210 fleet donated a perpetual trophy to the Yacht Club in honor of Commodore F. Gregg Bemis, to be awarded to the 210 fleet Championship Series winner. Commodore Bemis won the Cohasset fleet championship several times and the National Championship three times.  Commodore Bemis has been recognized by the United States Sailing Association (formerly USYRU) and the International Yacht Racing Union to receive their highest awards, respectively the Nathaniel G. Herreshoff Award and the Peppe Croce Award, for his contribution to the sport of sailing.

Benson Memorial Trophy

Commodore Philip Benson was an avid racer throughout New England, a founder of the 210 class and its National Champion in 1952.  Upon Commodore Benson’s death in 1971, his three daughters donated a ship’s clock for a trophy in his memory.  The Benson Trophy is to be awarded to a member of the Yacht Club who has made the most outstanding contribution to yachting, either through racing or otherwise, outside the Cohasset Yacht Club.

Alfred Elliott Memorial Trophy

Given in memory of Alfred Elliott, this trophy is awarded for the spirit and endeavor of a junior sailor who has shown any one or more of the following attributes when outstandingly demonstrated: special interest, devotion, desire to improve, fine sportsmanship and cooperation.

Clifford J. Dickson Cup
The Clifford J. Dickson Cup was given by the Cruising Committee in appreciation of the many and continuing years of service of our Steward, Cliff Dickson.  It is open to cruising and other keel boats, racing under an open handicap system.

Scott Ford Trophy

Given in memory of Scott Blanchard Ford, this trophy is awarded to a junior sailor who shows a sense of caring and responsibility towards others combined with a love and understanding of the ocean’s deeper meaning.  In Scott’s own young words, “The lonesome bellow of the fog horn, the drum of waves against the rocks, the sound of bacon splattering in the galley stove, and the putter of lobster boats on foggy mornings in Maine”.

Gutterson Cup

Named for Lyman Gutterson, a 210 sailor and longtime member of the Yacht Club, this award is given periodically to a club member otherwise unrecognized for his or her contribution to the interests of the 210 fleet.=

Higginson Bowl

The Higginson Bowl was given in memory of Commodore Charles Higginson. The Higginson Bowl is awarded to the class champion who has the best score among all of the racing classes eligible with an average start of at least three in the championship series. In the Optimists and 420’s, the winners of the August series are eligible. The winners in each class are rescored on the point percentage system in which each boat is scored one point for each finish and one point for each boat it beats in each race, its total score then being divided by the score it would have had if it had won every race in which it started.

Kasdon Trophy

Donated by the Kasdon family as an award for excellence in single-handed racing.

Moustache Cup

Donated to the Yacht Club by a sailing instructor who sported a large facial adornment, this cup is awarded annually to the junior who shows excellence in seamanship.

Scripture Memorial Trophy

Commodore Ralph Scripture wrote an article for Yachting magazine on the construction of the marine railway at the Yacht Club.  Between the time of acceptance and publication of the article, Mr. Scripture died;  instead of paying his estate for the article, the magazine donated a ship’s clock to the Yacht Club for an award in his memory. The Scripture Memorial Trophy is awarded to a person who will be under the age of 21 the following April 1 for outstanding performance in seamanship or racing, or for conspicuous sportsmanship. This trophy has been and is awarded periodically;  winners in the past have included a 110 national champion, Sears Bowl winners and top finishers, a member of the winning Newport-to-Bermuda Race and collegiate AlI-American sailors.

Roscoe Sherbrooke Single-Handed Trophy

Commodore Roscoe E. Sherbrooke was a lifelong sailor and devoted member of the Cohasset Yacht Club.  Upon his death, a group of his friends donated a binnacle in his memory to be raced for in a single-handed race.  The race committee has the perogative to choose the format each year, whether the racing shall be in one-design or handicap boats.

“Bim” Simonds Bowl

Successor to the Race Committee Cup for 210’s, Bim’s Bowl was given in honor of  Henry  G.“Bim” Simonds, Jr., a devoted race committee member.

Barron Memorial Trophy

Named for Commodore Barron, this is the Club’s oldest continually raced-for trophy. First sailed for in 1929, the Barron Memorial is awarded to the first boat to finish.
